«Lebenslinien» heisst ein Forschungs- und Ausstellungsprojekt mit offenem Ausgang. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Biographien einiger junger Menschen, die in den vergangenen Jahren in die Schweiz eingewandert sind und heute hier zur Schule gehen. «Lebenslinien» folgt den verschlungenen Pfaden ihrer Reise, begnügt sich aber nicht mit der blossen Nacherzählung individueller Schicksale.

«Life lines» is an open-ended research and exhibition project. It explores the biographies of a group of youths, some of which immigrated to Switzerland in recent years and now go to school here. While Life lines attempts to follow the tangled paths of their journeys, the intention is not to simply reiterate individual fates.

This video is a kind of progress report. It introduces key participants in the “Weg Zurück Da” project, but also serves to demonstrate its method, the defining feature of which is improvisation. Apart from a physical meeting in the museum – where the group drew, made music, told stories or participated in perceptual experiments with scent and sound – the material derives from sessions conducted over Zoom. Further phases are in the works.

Because background characters, they never stick out.

„She ends up reverting back to normal the next day, no matter what. But what if she found a book and used it to insert herself into the main story?“

One pupil writes screenplays. She does this on her own initiative and not as part of a school assignment. Nor does she have a specific project in mind, a film or a manga. The question she asks herself is this: What and how can I tell a story without succumbing to conventional narrative forms? How can the narrative be stretched so that the pupil herself finds a place in it, becomes capable of agency and shapes her fate rather than merely being told it, whether by her parents, by the state, by the rules of language, etc.?
